This graduate study programme in Nautical Engineering represents a logical and content-based enhancement of the existing programme at the Faculty of Maritime Studies, University of Split. It continues from the undergraduate study programme in Nautical Engineering, which is fully aligned with the provisions of STCW Regulation II/2 and the national Regulation on the Ranks and Certificates of Competence of Seafarers, prescribing the minimum requirements for obtaining the ranks of Chief Officer and Master on ships of 3,000 GT or more.
The curricula of the graduate study programme are fully harmonised with the needs of the maritime industry, as evidenced by the direct and indirect participation of external stakeholders in the design of certain courses – including representatives of shipping companies, agencies, port authorities, the shipbuilding industry, shipmasters, harbour masters, and members of the Croatian Navy.
The graduate study programme in Nautical Engineering is implemented in accordance with the most up-to-date requirements for the education of management-level personnel in the maritime sector – on board ships, within shipping companies, ports, and other commercial and public entities connected with maritime affairs.
The fundamental objectives and purpose of the graduate programme are:
regular education for the highest maritime ranks for Croatian shipping companies and the global market,
education of management-level personnel in the economic and public sectors of the maritime industry,
developing a culture of safety at sea and protection of the marine environment within the system of continuous education and training of seafarers,
applying a scientific approach to the renewal of the Croatian maritime economy,
continuous improvement of the quality of higher maritime education in accordance with international and EU standards, the Bologna Declaration, and lifelong learning principles.
Upon completion of the programme, students acquire competences for operating, managing and maintaining ship and navigation systems, conducting scientific research in the field of maritime sciences, active participation in economic activities and in the management of organisations and services within the maritime sector.
Graduates are qualified for employment on board ships of the world fleet, in companies engaged in maritime transport technology, the coastguard, harbour master’s offices, vessel traffic services, shipping agencies, ports, and companies specialising in the development, design, installation (shipbuilding) and maintenance of computer, electronic, communication and navigation systems, as well as automatic process control systems in the maritime industry.
Upon completion of the two-year graduate study programme, students obtain the academic title Master of Science in Nautical Engineering (univ. mag. ing. naut.).
