Nautical Engineering

The undergraduate study programme in Nautical Engineering is conducted in accordance with the most contemporary requirements for the education of management-level personnel on board merchant ships. In addition to the compliance of the study programme with the STCW Convention, the Faculty is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities necessary for acquiring the required knowledge and skills.

The fundamental objectives and purpose of the study programme in Nautical Engineering are:

  • regular education for the highest maritime officer ranks (Chief Officer and Master on ships of 3,000 GT or more) for Croatian shipping companies and the global market,

  • developing a culture of safety at sea and protection of the marine environment within the system of continuous education and training of seafarers,

  • a scientific approach to the revitalisation of the Croatian maritime economy,

  • the continuous improvement of the quality of higher education for maritime professionals in accordance with global and EU standards, the Bologna Declaration and lifelong learning (continuous training).

Upon completion of the programme, students acquire competences for operating, managing and maintaining ship and navigational systems, as well as for obtaining the ranks and certificates of competence in both the national and international merchant fleets.

This study represents a synthesis between technical sciences on one hand and practical implementation in maritime transport on the other. Completion of the study enables students to find employment on vessels of the world fleet, in companies engaged in maritime transport technology, the coastguard, ports, and companies involved in the development, design, installation (shipbuilding), and maintenance of computer, electronic, communication and navigation systems, as well as systems for automatic process control in the maritime sector.

From the standpoint of labour market needs in both the public and private sectors, the development of this study programme represents a response to the constant demand of shipping companies for qualified personnel capable of operating on modern vessels – complex technical and technological systems – and of understanding maritime operations from the perspective of all stakeholders in the maritime domain.

The study finds its application across all sectors of the economy connected with the sea and various scientific disciplines. It also provides a basis for effective cooperation between entrepreneurship and relevant social and governmental structures. Upon completion of the study, the acquired knowledge enables students to find employment in institutions and in maritime, transport and economic companies connected with maritime activities in any way.

The programme is fully aligned with the provisions of the STCW Convention, Regulation II/2, and the national Regulation on the Ranks and Certificates of Competence of Seafarers, which prescribes the minimum requirements for obtaining the ranks of Chief Officer and Master on ships of 3,000 GT or more. Furthermore, the syllabus fully covers the contents of IMO Model Course 7.01, i.e. the content recommended by the International Maritime Organization for fulfilling the requirements of STCW Regulation II/2.

The curricula of the undergraduate study programme are fully harmonised with the spirit and intentions of the STCW Convention (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), IMO and ISO standards. Their specific purpose is to educate seafarers with enhanced knowledge in the application of technologies required for effective ship operation and management and for raising the overall level of safety in maritime navigation.

The programmes have undergone recertification by the authorised body of the European Union – the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).

An evaluation of the undergraduate Nautical Engineering programme has been carried out by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs of Japan with the aim of aligning our ranks and qualifications with the corresponding higher education requirements in Japan, thereby enabling direct employment in the Japanese merchant fleet.

Upon completion of the three-year undergraduate study, students obtain the academic title Bachelor of Science in Nautical Engineering (univ. bacc. ing. naut.).

The undergraduate study programme is harmonised with equivalent programmes at the Faculties of Maritime Studies in Rijeka and Kotor, the Maritime Department of the University of Dubrovnik, and the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences in Zagreb, as well as with similar higher education institutions worldwide with which the Faculty of Maritime Studies, University of Split, has established various forms of cooperation. This ensures the fulfilment of the Bologna Declaration objectives: compatibility of study programmes and the mobility of teachers and students.

* Note: Passing the exams does not automatically include recognition of the training programmes. Certificates of completed training are issued to students who have passed all exams and fulfilled all other study obligations, as prescribed by the Study Regulations and the Regulation on the Ranks and Certificates of Competence of Seafarers. Certificates of completed training programmes are not issued individually or before the completion of the full three-year study programme.
